The old town of Trebon is a natural center of the Trebon basin, an undulating country with many forests and numerous fish ponds. In the 12th century on one of the tracks through the border forest a small village, or maybe just a fortified farm was established. The whole area was given to an active member of the Czech Duke's company, to Vitek of Prcice, who became the grandfather of the family Vitkovci including also the Dukes of Cesky Krumlov. In the half of the 13th century the area was owned by brothers Pelhrim and Ojir of the Landstejn branch of the family. In 1341 the place was recorded as a town and since 1366 it was called also by its present Czech name besides the original Witinegove (presumably Latin transcription of Vitkovci) and the German transcription Wittingau. In the same year the castle and the land came over to the brothers of Rozmberk. Their rule was the most prosperous period in the history of the town and the whole area, particularly during the reign of the last two Dukes Vilim and Petr Vok in the 16th century. The two biggest and best known fish ponds, Rozmberk and Svet, were built in that time. From 1660 until the 20th century the proprietors were from the Schwarzenberk family.
In 1978 the historical center of the town was declared a town reservation, a year later the a rea was declared a Protected landscape and a Biospherical UNESCO reserve.
The first reports of the town date back to the year 1262 when it was described as a market locality. Towards the end of the 13th century Trebon was already a fortified little town with a church and fortress. In the 14th century it was purchased by the Rozmberk family and thereafter it underwent enormous construction and economic development.
As for enterprises on the territory of the town the best known are the fisheries and the brewery built in 1379 which makes the famous Regent beer.
The curative effects of the local peat have been known since time immemorial. Berta's spa was established in the 1880's. In 1950 the spa was nationalized and the State built a sanatorium for the treatment of disorders of the motor system. In 1975 a modern spa complex was opened on the western bank of the Svet (World) pond (210 hectares). Curative peat is extracted south of the town in the Svata Barbora forest area.
The town has a uniquely preserved historic lay-out with fortifications and with gates and bastions from the years 1525- 1527. The Church of St. Giles is a rare monument of Gothic architecture. Adjoining is the Gothic monastery of the Augustinian order, built in Baroque style in the 18th century.
Trebon castle from the second half of the 14th century was reconstructed into a chateau that is famous for its archives. Other architectural gems of the town include the town hall, the Gothic. Renaissance and Baroque burger houses, the cemetery church of St. Elizabeth and the Marian column.
Trebon is one of the most beautiful towns of southern Bohemia and its surroundings will charm any perceptive human soul. It is a paradise for anglers, lovers of water sports, pedest rian tours and cycling.
