Krnov is an important centre of economy, culture and society in Czech Silesia. The town came into being at the crossing of trade roads crossing here two rivers, in a space of land settled already in younger Stone Age. Since 1377 it had been the seat of the princes of Krnov. Battles and wars damaged or destroyed many precious objects and monuments. Since 19th century it has belonged to industrial towns with textile, machines and foodstuff industries. It is world famous for its artistic production of organs. The railway connects Krnov with Olomouc, Ostrava, Opava, Jesenik and a road over the border to Poland. Krnov is situated at na altitude of 315 m above the sea level among the last bulges of the Nizky Jesenik (the Low Ash) Mountains. There are the Karlova Studanka, Jesenik and Lipova spas, as well as the lovely landscape of Osoblaha and the water dams of Otmuchov, Nisa and Opole. The historical centre of Krnov, with the citizens' houses, as well as the castle, the Baroque churches and the Gothic concert hall tells us about the ancient history of the town.
