The spa is located in a northwestern part of Slovakia close to trencin in one of the side valleys of central
Vah River region. Altitude is 272 m above sea level. Due to its position the spa is protected from winds, as well as easily accessible to sunshine from the south. Their romantic beauty inspired the famous novelist Mor Jokai to describe them as
the Pearl of Carpathian.
Trencianske Teplice is the magnificent natural surroundings and healing effects of the thermal springs that make Trencianske Teplice one of the most popular and
oldest spa centres in Slovakia.
Mineral and hot water springs relate to the breaks in earth crust, caused by the earth movements and volcanic eruptions. Precipitation water infiltrates deep in the earth where it is warmed up and enriched by minerals: juvenilia hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. These warmed-up masses penetrate then further on under the surface until they are stopped by non-permeable blocks. Here they burst up on surface in a form of hot springs.
The sulphuric springs in Trencianske Teplice are of a unique quality in Europe as they burst up right under the pools and baths. It means there are no long pipelines and the patients take procedures in the original hot spring water. They have ideal temperature of 36,6 'C - 40,2 'C.
The spa in Trencianske Teplice has five pools. Sina (40,2 'C) and Pl (36,6 - 37 'C) use water pipelines. Krym Hotel has its own pool with a temperature of 40 'C. Sulphuric mud is also used for medical purposes.
First written mention about the warm sprngs in this area dates back to 1242, detailed description comes from Tomas Jordan from Klausenburg dated 1580.
In 1594 magnete Stefan Illashazy acquired the spa together with Trecin castle. In 1835 they were bought by a Vieniese banker baron Juraj Sina. The most beuatiful memory of the Sina period is Hammam Bath house. It was built by a granddaughter of Jurij Sina Ifigenia in 1888, originally as a bathhouse ina Moorish style. Currently the spa has 1158 beds of the most discerning, as well as less demanding clients.
The part of the town which forms the spa, with its
sanatoriums in classical and modern styles, is situated in a beautiful park bordering on parkland forests with well-kept paths and places from which you can admire the view. The treatment of disorders of the motor organs and the nervous system is based on the curative springs. The medical programme includes all kinds of traditional and modern therapeutic methods, drinking cures, physiotherapy and medicamentary treatment.
The social life in the spa is very busy and varied. There are annual performances organized as part of the
"Hudobne leto" summer festival, with regular promenade concerts and performances by folklore ensambles.
Another imporatnt event is
the film festival, which Geraldine Chaplin, daughter of the famous actor, honoured with her presence in 1997. In the summer season the Zelena Zaba swimming pool is crowded with visitors, and for those guests who enjoy sports there are tennis courts and a fitness centre available all year round and even a gentle ski slope with a ski lift in the winter months.
